Oahu (Hawaii)

I know, it’s a long time since my last post. But it is not that easy to do some work if you are in the Hawaiian mood. 🙂

The first intention I had as I arrived in Honolulu was that these Islands were totally overrated. I didn’t feel the beauty and the Hawaiian spirit. For me it was expensive, it had too many tourists and a lot of homeless people. Not what you think about “paradise islands”.

But I heard from many people, that Waikiki on Oahu is not the real Hawaii and I need to go to other islands. That was also my plan. I thought it will be easy to rent a car and camp around the islands. But the problem is that sleeping in a car is totally prohibited and also dangerous in Hawaii and you need to pre-book the campgrounds 30 days in advance. The option to book in to one of the thousands resorts was too expensive for me. Therefore I decided to try it over Airbnb.

The first 3 days I had an apartment only two blocks from Waikiki Beach with sea view. Apart from my first surf lesson on Waikiki Beach I haven’t done a lot there. I used the time to plan my further steps, to book the flights to the other islands and rent the different cars and accommodations.
The rest of the week I had a room in a shared apartment of a “real surfer guy” (Bobby) on the north shore. It was really nice there because it was directly at the beachfront and Bobby and the other 2 Girls from California were very friendly and cool. With my rental car I drove a little bit around the island and enjoyed different beaches.

My plan for the Hawaiian Islands was as followed:

– 1 week Oahu (accommodation in Waikiki and North Shore)
– 1 week Big Island (accommodation in Kona and Hilo)
– 1 week Maui (accommodation in Kihei)
– Back to Honolulu 1 day and Flight to San Francisco
