Big Island (Hawaii)

The Island of Hawai`i (called Big Island) is the biggest island of the US State Hawaii. The Island is dominated by volcanic activities. And it has with Mauna Kea the world’s tallest mountain measured from its sea floor base. It is with over 10’000m taller than the Mount Everest. The peak stands 4’205m above sea level.

I visited Mauna Kea, not until the summit because I went up too fast and got some problems to breath… never happened to me before but it forces me to go back. There was a sign on the visitor centre (on 2’800m) that you need to wait there for at least 30min until you go further, but as a Swiss I ignored that and started my hike. That was a bad decision. But it is obvious that if you drive in less than an hour from 0m to 2’800m sea level your body needs acclimatization to the altitude.
I also visited the Volcanoes National Park with the still active Kilauea, black sand beaches and waterfalls.
